    Metástasis musculares del adenocarcinoma renal

    El carcinoma renal puede producir metástasis, siendo las más frecuentes en pulmón, hígado, esqueleto y encéfalo. Las metástasis aisladas en el músculo esquelético son muy raras, existiendo alrededor de veinte casos publicados en la literatura. Presentamos dos casos de metástasis de carcinoma renal, localizadas en el músculo esquelético. Es importante el diagnóstico diferencial de estas metástasis con los sarcomas de partes blandas, ya que su tratamiento y pronóstico son muy diferentes.The renal cell carcinoma can produce metastatic, the most common are in lung, liver, bones and encephalon. The isolated metastatic in muscle are unusual, there are only twenty cases published, most of them isolated cases. We present two cases of metastatic of renal cell carcinoma isolated in skeletal muscle. It is very important the differential diagnosis of this kind of lesions with soft tissue sarcomas because treatment and prognosis are very different

    Parallel Online Time Warping for Real-Time Audio-to-Score Alignment in Multi-core Systems

    [EN] The Audio-to-Score framework consists of two separate stages: pre- processing and alignment. The alignment is commonly solved through offline Dynamic Time Warping (DTW), which is a method to find the path over the distortion matrix with the minimum cost to determine the relation between the performance and the musical score times. In this work we propose a par- allel online DTW solution based on a client-server architecture. The current version of the application has been implemented for multi-core architectures (x86, x64 and ARM), thus covering either powerful systems or mobile devices. An extensive experimentation has been conducted in order to validate the software.     Spectroscopic observations of the δ Scorpii binary during its recent periastron passage

    The bright star δ Sco has been considered a typical B0-type object for many years. Spectra of the star published prior to 1990 showed no evidence of emission, but only of short-term line profile variations attributed to nonradial pulsations. Speckle interferometric observations show that δ Sco is a binary system with a highlyeccentric orbit and a period of ~10.6 years. Weak emission in the Hα line was detected in its spectrum for the rst time during a periastron passage in 1990. Shortly before the next periastron passage in the summer of 2000, the binary entered a strong Hα emission and enhanced mass-loss phase. We monitored the spectroscopic development of the Be outburst from July 2000 through March 2001.     HReMAS: Hybrid Real-time Musical Alignment System

    [EN] This paper presents a real-time audio-to-score alignment system for musical applications. The aim of these systems is to synchronize a live musical performance with its symbolic representation in a music sheet. We have used as a base our previous real-time alignment system by enhancing it with a traceback stage, a stage used in offline alignment to improve the accuracy of the aligned note. This stage introduces some delay, what forces to assume a trade-off between output delay and alignment accuracy that must be considered in the design of this type of hybrid techniques. We have also improved our former system to execute faster in order to minimize this delay.     Late coronary occlusion after intracoronary brachytherapy

    BACKGROUND: Intracoronary brachytherapy appears to be a promising technology to prevent restenosis. Presently, limited data are available regarding the late safety of this therapeutic modality. The aim of the study was to determine the incidence of late (>1 month) thrombosis after PTCA and radiotherapy. METHODS AND RESULTS: From April 1997 to March 1999, we successfully treated 108 patients with PTCA followed by intracoronary beta-radiation. Ninety-one patients have completed at least 2 months of clinical follow-up. Of these patients, 6.6% (6 patients) presented with sudden thrombotic events confirmed by angiography 2 to 15 months after intervention (2 balloon angioplasty and 4 stent). Some factors (overlapping stents, unhealed dissection) may have triggered the thrombosis process, but the timing of the event is extremely unusual. Therefore, the effect of radiation on delaying the healing process and maintaining a thrombogenic coronary surface is proposed as the most plausible mechanism to explain such late events. CONCLUSIONS: Late and sudden thrombosis after PTCA followed by intracoronary radiotherapy is a new phenomenon in interventional cardiology

    Fructose consumption reduces hippocampal synaptic plasticity underlying cognitive performance

    AbstractMetabolic syndrome (MetS) is a global epidemic, which involves a spectrum of metabolic disorders comprising diabetes and obesity. The impact of MetS on the brain is becoming to be a concern, however, the poor understanding of mechanisms involved has limited the development of therapeutic strategies. We induced a MetS-like condition by exposing mice to fructose feeding for 7weeks. There was a dramatic deterioration in the capacity of the hippocampus to sustain synaptic plasticity in the forms of long-term potentiation (LTP) and long-term depression (LTD). Mice exposed to fructose showed a reduction in the number of contact zones and the size of postsynaptic densities (PSDs) in the hippocampus, as well as a decrease in hippocampal neurogenesis. There was an increase in lipid peroxidation likely associated with a deficiency in plasma membrane excitability. Consistent with an overall hippocampal dysfunction, there was a subsequent decrease in hippocampal dependent learning and memory performance, i.e., spatial learning and episodic memory. Most of the pathological sequel of MetS in the brain was reversed three month after discontinue fructose feeding. These results are novel to show that MetS triggers a cascade of molecular events, which disrupt hippocampal functional plasticity, and specific aspects of learning and memory function. The overall information raises concerns about the risk imposed by excessive fructose consumption on the pathology of neurological disorders

    Scarce population genetic differentiation but substantial spatiotemporal phenotypic variation of water‑use efficiency in Pinus sylvestris at its western distribution range

    Water and carbon fluxes in forests are largely related to leaf gas exchange physiology varying across spatiotemporal scales and modulated by plant responses to environmental cues. We quantified the relevance of genetic and phenotypic variation of intrinsic water-use efficiency (WUEi, ratio of net photosynthesis to stomatal conductance of water) in Pinus sylvestris L. growing in the Iberian Peninsula as inferred from tree-ring carbon isotopes. Inter-population genetic variation, evaluated in a provenance trial comprising Spanish and German populations, was low and relevant only at continental scale. In contrast, phenotypic variation, evaluated in natural stands (at spatial level) and by tree-ring chronologies (at temporal inter-annual level), was important and ten- and threefold larger than the population genetic variance, respectively. These results points to preponderance of plastic responses dominating variability in WUEi for this species. Spatial phenotypic variation in WUEi correlated negatively with soil depth (r = − 0.66; p < 0.01), while temporal phenotypic variation was mainly driven by summer precipitation. At the spatial level, WUEi could be scaled-up to ecosystem-level WUE derived from remote sensing data by accounting for soil water-holding capacity (r = 0.63; p < 0.01). This outcome demonstrates a direct influence of the variation of leaf-level WUEi on ecosystem water and carbon balance differentiation. Our findings highlight the contrasting importance of genetic variation (negligible) and plastic responses in WUEi (large, with changes of up to 33% among sites) on determining carbon and water budgets at stand and ecosystem scales in a widespread conifer such as Pinus sylvestris.This work was supported by the Spanish Government [MINECO Grant Number AGL2015-68274-C3-3-R] and the Russian Science Foundation (Project Number 14-14-00219-P, mathematical approach).     Geographic Miss

    Background—A recognized limitation of endovascular ß-radiation therapy is the development of new stenosis at the edges of the irradiated area. The combination of injury and low-dose radiation may be the precursor of this phenomenon. We translated the radio-oncological concept of "geographic miss" to define cases in which the radiation source did not fully cover the injured area. The aims of the study were to determine the incidence and causes of geographic miss and evaluate the impact of this inadequate treatment on the outcome of patients treated with intracoronary ß-radiation. Methods and Results—We analyzed 50 consecutive patients treated with ß-radiation after percutaneous coronary intervention. The prescribed dose ranged between 12 and 20 Gy at 2 mm from the source axis. By means of quantitative coronary angiography, the irradiated segment (IRS) and both edges were studied before and after intervention and at 6-month follow-up. Edges that were injured during the procedure constituted the geographic miss edges. Twenty-two edges were injured during the intervention, mainly because of procedural complications that extended the treatment beyond the margins of the IRS. Late loss was significantly higher in geographic miss edges than in IRSs and uninjured edges (0.84±0.6 versus 0.15±0.4 and 0.09±0.4 mm, respectively; P<0.0001). Similarly, restenosis rate was significantly higher in the injured edges (10% within IRS, 40.9% in geographic miss edges, and 1.9% in uninjured edges; P<0.001).
